Truck insurance costs

How much does commercial truck insurance cost?

There's no honest flat number — but there are exactly eight factors carriers rate on. Understand them and you can control what you pay.

Every trucking operation is rated individually, so any site quoting a single average premium is guessing. What we can tell you precisely is how carriers build your price — and where independent agents like us have room to move it in your favor.

Operating authority & experience

New authorities typically pay the most in their first two years. Carriers price heavily on how long you've held your own USDOT authority and your prior insurance history.

Driving records

MVRs for every driver on the policy. Violations and at-fault accidents in the last 3–5 years are the single biggest rate driver for most operations.

What you haul

General dry freight rates lower than refrigerated, hazardous, or high-value commodities. Cargo type affects both your liability and your cargo premium.

Radius of operation

Local and regional operations usually rate lower than long-haul. Carriers look at your typical lanes and how far from home base you run.

Equipment value & age

Physical damage premium tracks the stated value of your tractor and trailer. Newer equipment costs more to insure but often qualifies for better carrier programs.

Coverage limits & deductibles

Higher liability limits cost more; higher deductibles cost less. The right balance depends on your contracts and what you could absorb out of pocket.

Loss history

Prior claims follow you for 3–5 years. A clean loss run is the strongest negotiating tool you have — and we present it to carriers properly.

Fleet size

Per-unit cost often drops as fleets grow and qualify for fleet rating programs. Scheduled fleets also get rated as a whole rather than truck by truck.

How to pay less without cutting coverage

  • Shop multiple A-rated carriers instead of renewing blind
  • Set accurate stated values — don't over-insure your equipment
  • Match deductibles to what you can actually absorb
  • Keep clean MVRs and document driver safety programs
  • Report radius and commodity honestly — misclassification causes claim denials
  • Ask about paid-in-full and continuous-insurance discounts

The biggest lever isn't on this list: an independent agent who specializes in trucking. We shop your operation across multiple A-rated carriers, present your loss history correctly, and structure limits so you're not paying for coverage your contracts don't require. That's where real savings come from.
